Challenge
Libraries have changed from a place to borrow books, to a place where people can greatly improve their lives. Learn new job skills. Learn to speak english. Find a safe place to stay after school. All for free.
Queens, New York's most diverse borough, has over 128 different languages spoken. The Queens Library website and it's 60+ physical locations have become an important resource to the immigrant population and life-long residents alike.
With over 2 Million page views per month this dated site no longer reflected the important new role Queens Library plays in their local community.
Solution
I led the design team and client through the full UX lifecycle:
• UX Research
• Information Architecture
• Wireframes
• Visual Design
We overhauled the information architecture, wireframes, creating a new visual language for the site, and proof-of-concept code, and delivered assets for the Queens IT team to implement.
After a series of client workshops & exercises, we produced a Discovery Research Report detailing our findings from:
• Audience Analysis workshop (User Personas)
• Online Card Sorting
• Competitive Audit
• Content Audit / Strategy
• Current Sitemap / Ecology Map
• Brand & Creative Workshops
Businesses committed to a socially responsible and brighter future are brought into the Chase Brighter Network.
Consumers are rewarded for shopping at these businesses with low interest rates and double/triple reward points.
Over 120+ languages are spoken in Queens. We created ficitious User Personas to help us understand and uncover our users backgrounds, goals, questions, needs and wants.

Library customers were given card sorting exercises, grouping website content into categories and labels. In this way, we could better understand how real users thought about content and site tasks... not how we or the library themselves thought it should be organized.

We met with client content owners to define what content remains, is modified, deleted or needs to be created. We then proceeded to create a future sitemap, describing the new information architecture underlying the site design.

Wireframes
100+ wireframes created across both desktop and mobile.
Visual Design
We evolved the existing Queens Library Brand Guidelines to re-imagine how our new site could evolve the overall look and feel into a responive design system.
